OBJECT HISTORY: Lefebers' Glass Plate Negatives

Kodachrome? Fujifilm? Ektachrome? All too modern! We're stepping back more than a century to an era when photographers used glass plates – not film – to capture an image.

Wauwatosa’s Lefeber Brothers Department Store

In 1886, three brothers – James, Abraham, and Joseph Lefeber – opened a general store selling farm implements and general merchandise on the lower level of the old Wauwatosa House. The three-story wood frame inn once served travelers along the Milwaukee to Watertown Plank Road that first reached Wauwatosa in 1849.

Images of a Treasured Childhood: At Home with the Lefebers

The Wauwatosa Historical Society is fortunate to be the permanent caretaker of over 2,000 glass plate negatives documenting the Lefeber family from 1900 to about 1935. This unique and extensive collection of images allows a first-hand look into the lives of an upper-middle-class family during the early 20th century in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin.

Images of the Wisconsin Dells (Waterparks Not Included!)

The Lefebers’ family photographs present a view of the Wisconsin Dells of long ago – the river, the rock formations, the people, and the history.
